nothin' but the rent

For as long as I can remember I've been obsessed with interior design... I used to draw floor plans as a child and while I never inherited my mothers baking skills, with her guidance I could hang wallpaper by the time I was twelve. I spend hours online reading design blogs and the arrival of the new Farrow & Ball paint chart or latest copy of Living Etc will elicit squeals of excitement.

I've house shared, cohabited, been a landlord, home owner and tenant and whether I was starting a project or had just finished doing up a whole house, I still read about interior design voraciously. Now that I'm renting again, the one thing I've noticed is that while all these magazines are sites are useful inspiration, none of them really cater for renters. Those of us who can't rip out the bathroom or tear down internal walls, those of us indeed, who may not even be permitted to paint a wall. So, this blog is going to be about inspiration & aspiration, yes, but with designs and ideas in mind that neither break the bank or put your deposit at risk.

Now I'm not saying I'm an expert, but over the years I've done everything from re-designing a room to gutting a house. I've produced mood boards for friends, pattern matched ridiculously expensive wallpaper, almost electrocuted myself with ill conceived lighting arrangements, had my ideal bathroom installed then moved out three months after completion and designed & had my dream kitchen fitted and then sold up two years later. I like to think I have a good eye and I'm collecting more ideas on a daily basis than are ever going to come to fruition in my own home, so I thought they would find a good home here. I will also be including tips and projects from my own flat and have a few things coming up that I'm really excited about and wanted to share.

I'm also going to be blogging about gardening. Any outside space in London is precious and I've recently begun to make the most of my own. I hope to include ideas that can be adapted to any space, from a window box to a large garden.

I'll be including some bits of DIY [nothing too complicated] some before and after photos [when I manage to remember to take them] some shopping finds and may be a bit of history too.

To sum up, this blog is about inspiration, sharing ideas, making your home your own without upsetting your landlord... and taking it all with you when you go...
